(BN) POND LIFE | JANÉ CTCA ROUND (PRINTED RUG)

Cape Town Creative Academy student, Jané Louw, gives some insight into her 'Pond Life' Collection of rugs. "Children interact with their surroundings in a way that indulges in fantasy. Some of the most fun I had as a child was imagining that the floor was lava with my brother and hopping between the furniture... This led me to question how I could create a rug that prompts more imaginative play in children's lives. I think the pond allows us to imagine different worlds in our surroundings and engage in storytelling, while encouraging games of discovery, counting and memorisation." Printed on an ultra-fine soft polyester, Airloom's Printed Collection rugs add a splash of colour and fun design to any space. It also has a built-in non-slip backing.

This rug is part of the Airloom X CTCA EDIT Collaboration

Airloom engaged with Cape Town Creative Academy (CTCA) third-year students in the form of a competition during the course of the 2023 second term, with the goal of Bringing the ideas of young local creatives to life through a range of South African kids' printed rugs. The focus was on imaginative play and authentic storytelling.

Jané Louw, one of our winners, tells us about the inspiration behind her 'Pond Life' Collection:

"When I first saw the brief for this project it made me think about my favourite games as a child, which were always made up because you could make the rules as you go and never get tired because it never felt the same. Children interact with their surroundings in a way that indulges in fantasy. Some of the most fun I had as a child was imagining that the floor was lava with my brother and hopping between the furniture. I also spent hours in our garden building houses for fairies out of sticks and leaves. This led me to question how I could create a rug that prompts more imaginative play in children's lives.

How do I imagine children engaging with these rugs? The possibilities are endless and I think that kids sometimes have more creativity than us grown-ups. The pond allows us to imagine different worlds in our surroundings and engage in storytelling. The various elements in the ecosystem of the pond also allow for games of discovery, counting and memorisation. It was also important to me to consider the intimate relationship children have with the floor, this is where you dump out your toys or play board games or wrestle with your siblings - so it feels appropriate that this space should be honoured as a destination and not just an afterthought.

I would love to see parents indulging their children's imaginations and enabling their kids to build rich, imaginative fantasy worlds. My parent's commitment to reading me lots of stories is also what helped me develop a rich imagination. I believe there is space for families to come together and enjoy the interactive nature of my design, since there is no set game or activity attached to the design, there is also no age limit."
